ABB Launches System 800xA 7.0 with LTS and Modular Automation
As a Long-Term Support (LTS) release, System 800xA 7.0 offers a stable and predictable path for both existing installations and new projects. It delivers broad Windows OS compatibility, expanded virtualization support, and long-term continuity without disruptive upgrade cycles. Building on ABB’s proven leadership in process automation, System 800xA 7.0 provides customers with the flexibility to keep their control systems secure, up-to-date, and aligned with rapidly evolving digital demands.
The platform is built on a modern, open, and modular automation ecosystem designed for interoperability, scalability, and integration across industrial domains. As the first DCS to adopt ABB’s Automation Extended program, System 800xA enables gradual digital adoption for process and system monitoring and optimization. Its “separation of concerns” architecture allows customers to deploy performance monitoring, advanced analytics, and AI-based decision support applications without affecting the mission-critical control layer that safeguards operations.
“System 800xA 7.0 represents a major milestone in delivering innovation with continuity,” said Stefan Basenach, Senior Vice President at ABB Automation Technology. “Customers want to modernize at their own pace while protecting the value of existing systems. With 7.0, we provide a platform that is robust today and future-ready. This release not only strengthens core control capabilities but also opens the door to Automation Extended functionality, enabling stepwise adoption of next-generation digital technologies without disruption.”
Key Enhancements in System 800xA 7.0
Extension Packs – a new delivery model
System 800xA 7.0 introduces Extension Packs, a modular software delivery approach that allows customers to adopt innovations independently of the base software version. This approach reduces large-scale upgrades, minimizes operational risks, and lowers lifecycle costs.
Broader OS and virtualization support
The system supports two generations of Microsoft operating systems, including Windows Server 2025/2022 and Windows 11/10, providing flexible upgrade options. It also supports multiple virtualization platforms, including VMware and Hyper-V, offering more flexibility in deploying and maintaining automation infrastructure.
Enhanced cybersecurity and system hardening
System 800xA 7.0 includes native Microsoft Defender malware protection, IEC 62443-aligned security features, improved certificate management, and updated core components. These enhancements help protect critical systems against modern cyber threats while simplifying security maintenance.
Modern engineering tools and expanded connectivity
Version 7.0 enhances OPC UA client/server functionality, Ethernet-APL device integration, and network-centric I/O performance, improving project scalability and interoperability. It also supports the latest MTP standards for ABB’s Modular Automation Orchestration Designer, helping customers meet emerging requirements for modular production.
